Gimli was of the royal line, but not close to the succession; he was the third cousin once removed of Dáin II Ironfoot. Gimli was voiced by David Buck in Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated version of The Lord of the Rings. Gimli does not appear in Rankin/Bass’s 1980 animated version of The Return of the King. In Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, Gimli is played by the Welsh actor John Rhys-Davies. This lakeside town is about an hour drive north of Winnipeg and is a great summer or winter destination. During the writing of The Lord of the Rings, as told in The Return of the Shadow, What is Gimli‘s character was first named Frar, then Burin, and he was the son of Balin. After the destruction of the Ring, Gimli leads many Dwarves south to Aglarond, becoming the first Lord of the Glittering Caves. They build “great works” in Rohan and Gondor, and replace the ruined gate of Minas Tirith with one made of mithril and steel.
War of the Ring
Gandalf leads them to Rohan’s capital, Edoras, where he rouses Théoden to war against Saruman. He and Legolas engage in an Orc-slaying contest (Gimli wins by one; he kills 42 to Legolas’s 41). Gimli saves Éomer’s life by killing two orcs and driving off two others. Later, Gimli’s vivid description of the Glittering Caves of Aglarond moves Legolas to promise to visit the caves when the War was over; and eventually they make the visit together. After the battle, Gimli witnesses Gandalf casting Saruman out of the Order of Wizards; he sees through Saruman’s lies with the words “This wizard’s words stand on their heads”.
Through his father, Gimli was also the first cousin once removed of Balin, Lord of Moria, and his brother Dwalin, two more former companions of Bilbo. While she had refused the same request from Fëanor, Galadriel generously gave him three, which would lead to his name in later years of “Lockbearer”. When the Fellowship of the Ring fractured, Gimli accompanied Aragorn and Legolas in pursuit of Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, who had been captured by the forces of Isengard. At Amon Hen, the company is divided, and Gimli joins Legolas and Aragorn in pursuing Merry and Pippin who have been captured by Orcs. After running many miles in a few days to the land of Rohan, they meet Éomer, nephew of Rohan’s King Théoden, with a troop of cavalry, which has killed all the Orcs. When Éomer speaks badly of the name Galadriel, Gimli responds harshly, but Aragorn prevents a fight.

Completed construction in November 2018 and opened a new Water Treatment Plant located at the Gimli Industrial Park, added two wells, replaced 8,000 metres of (distribution?) pipes, 1,200 metres of water main pipe. The water distribution infrastructure serves Gimli and the nearby cottages of Pelican Beach just north of the community. The project cost a total of C$7 million and was cost-shared by all three levels of government. A main industrial business in Gimli is the Crown Royal whiskey distillery.

The harbour in Gimli supports over 50 commercial fishing families on Lake Winnipeg. Gimli is part of Area 2 in the Lake Winnipeg fishery and has an overall quota of 1,000,000 kilograms of mostly pickerel from the south basin of the lake as well as white fish from the north basin. The fish was processed in Gimli since the establishment of the pier in 1900, a main wooden pier then. With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1905, production of the harvested fish grew with fish processing plants establishing in the community. In 1968 the Government of Canada established the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation and moved the processing of the fish to Winnipeg. In 1875, the settlers landed south of Gimli at Willow Island and then had to walk and carry the remaining goods to the current site of Gimli.

The Government of Canada provided the community of Gimli with a grant in 1898 to build a harbour in the community. A permanent dock was built in 1900 and a lighthouse was added in 1910. The lighthouse would later be damaged in an ice pileup in 1943, which managed to push it over. The original top of the lighthouse was saved and later put on top of a rebuilt replica in 1974 as part of a tourist attraction. The lighthouse is currently managed by the New Iceland Heritage Museum.

The Town of Gimli amalgamated with the Rural Municipality of Gimli in 2003, turning the former town into a population centre within the rural municipality. In 2006, Icelandic-Canadian poet David Arnason contributed a naturally washer-shaped “lucky stone” from the shores of Lake Winnipeg at Gimli to the Six String Nation project.
Eventually, though, he returned to the Glittering Caves with a contingent of dwarves, becoming the “Lord of the Glittering Caves”. He rebuilt the gates of Minas Tirith with mithril and steel, and in both Gondor and Rohan accomplished great works. There he met his friends Merry and Pippin and the history of his people made its way to the Red Book; he also set out the genealogical tree of the Dwarves of Erebor for King Elessar. After Gandalf fell with Durin’s Bane from the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, the Fellowship entered the Woods of Lothlórien, thus making Gimli the first Dwarf to enter that realm since the Balrog was awakened in Moria. However, there was some tension regarding Gimli’s being in the Wood, and his Elven escorts wished to blindfold him for the journey.
